You thought the Robosharks in Aquaria Towers were nightmares in the original? Here, they have a much more menacing and realistic design, complete with glowing red eyes, a huge step up in Nightmare Fuel from their almost cartoonish design in the original. The new design for the bushes from Fracture Hills makes them look like a rejected or deformed Muppet, including the bulging eyes and featureless gaping black-hole of a mouth. Their darker and more foreboding boss arenas also help make them far more threatening. Crush and Gulp are more feral-looking in this version, with smaller, meaner-looking eyes and far more teeth than just one each. Ripto's new design makes him look significantly more monstrous and intimidating, complete with snake-like eyes and sharp teeth that make for one hell of a Slasher Smile. That their non-armored companions are doing it all the time suggests they're not quite right in the head. However, unlike the Carrot-Topped Monks, the Slap-Happy Armored Monks only do so when you get close. The Monk enemies in Dream Weavers are now doing weird dances. Most enemies from the Dream Weavers worlds have been made scarier to fit their origin in nightmares. The Gnorc Dudes carry bigger knives and are wearing Slasher Smiles. The majority of enemies in Misty Bog are more threatening, especially the Dragon-Eating Plants, which now make vocal grunts. The caves they inhabit feature webs and fog, and are darker in atmosphere. The Metalback Spiders from High Caves are back, ready to give once again nightmares to every arachnophobe out there with their new, more realistic design, as well as their Glowing Eyes of Doom. His wool appears to be singed from past encounters with Spyro. Toasty has a more intimidating appearance that extends to the sheep underneath the robes, who looks more manic. 
Many of these games also had homes on the PS1, they also made their way outside of Sony's first console and competed with bandicoots, dragons and other animal mascots that dominated 90s gaming. Luckily however, there is a massive catalog of 3D platformers which have several elements of Spyro's gameplay, design and art style. Now that Microsoft has purchased Activision Blizzard, the return of the purple dragon is put further into doubt and rumors of his return have grown cold.

This hype might have fans itching to play games similar to Spyro in the meantime. Since Crash 4 was developed & published by the same teams that made the Reignited Trilogy, fans have hope that the purple dragon will receive a new game of his own in due time.
